Case Study: Application of SD9633 Drill Bit in Liujiagou Formation, Well Su 76-14-20X
1. Project Background
Well Su 76-14-20X is located in the Sulige Gas Field, Ordos Basin, and was operated by the 40607 Drilling Crew. The Liujiagou Formation in this block is notoriously hard to drill: it is dominated by medium-fine grained quartz sandstone and siltstone, interbedded with multiple layers of mudstone, featuring extreme abrasiveness and poor drillability. For years, conventional PDC bits have underperformed severely here, with average single-bit footage of only 1,200–1,500 meters and an average ROP (Rate of Penetration) of just 20–25 m/h. This not only dragged out the entire drilling cycle but also pushed up drilling costs significantly.

2. Bit Selection
Tailored specifically to the Liujiagou Formation’s harsh conditions, we supplied our self-manufactured 8-1/2" SD9633 PDC bit (Bit Serial No.: B2557) for the project. This bit is built for highly abrasive sandstone formations, with key optimizations:
Blades made of high-wear alloy matrix, paired with impact-resistant cutting teeth to withstand heavy wear in hard rock;
Optimized hydraulic flow channels and enlarged nozzles for efficient cuttings removal, preventing bit balling;
Adjusted blade layout for more uniform bit loading, improving drilling stability and reducing well deviation risk.
3. Field Application Data
The on-site performance of the SD9633 bit is as follows:
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Bit Specification | 8-1/2" SD9633 |
| Bit Serial No. | B2557 |
| Well No. | Su 76-14-20X |
| Drilling Crew | 40607 Drilling Crew |
| Drilling Interval | 692m ~ 2800m |
| Drilled Formation | Liujiagou Formation |
| Total Footage Drilled | 2108m |
| Net Drilling Time | 60h |
| Average ROP | 35.13m/h |
4. Application Results
Major Boost in Single-Bit FootageThe SD9633 bit drilled 2108 meters in a single run, a more than 40% increase over the average footage of conventional bits in the same formation. This cut down tripping operations drastically, reduced the crew’s workload, and lowered downhole operation risks.
Remarkable ROP ImprovementThe average ROP hit 35.13 m/h, far outperforming conventional bits, with a speed increase of over 40%. This shortened the drilling cycle of this interval substantially, saving the crew significant construction time.
Excellent Wear Resistance & ReliabilityAfter pulling the bit out of the hole, inspection showed minimal wear on cutting teeth, no obvious chipping or tooth loss, and intact blade structure. This confirms the bit’s outstanding adaptability to the highly abrasive Liujiagou Formation, fully meeting the demands of long-interval efficient drilling.
5. Conclusion
This application in Well Su 76-14-20X fully proves the exceptional performance of our SD9633 PDC bit in the Liujiagou Formation of the Sulige Block. Its high footage and fast ROP have effectively helped the drilling crew cut costs and shorten construction cycles, earning full recognition from the on-site team.
We will continue optimizing bit designs based on real-world field data, developing more efficient and reliable bit products for different blocks and formations, and delivering high-quality drilling solutions to operators worldwide.
