Anchor Rod

An anchor rod is a threaded steel bar or cable system installed in drilled boreholes and grouted in place to provide structural support in rock and soil. In mining, tunneling, and civil construction, anchor rods (also called rock bolts or ground anchors) prevent rock mass failure by transferring loads from unstable ground into competent strata. The drill bit used to create the anchor hole directly affects installation quality and pull-out strength.

Q: What drill bit should I use for anchor rod installation?

A: For most rock anchor installations, a 2-3 inch PDC or drag bit creates the right hole diameter—typically 10-15mm larger than the rod for adequate grout annulus. In very hard rock, use an impregnated diamond bit for clean, straight holes.
