Pilot Bit

A pilot bit is a smaller-diameter bit that drills ahead of the main reaming tool, creating a guide hole that the reamer follows to enlarge to final borehole diameter. This two-stage drilling approach is standard in hole opening operations where a single large bit would be impractical or too costly. Pilot bits are also used in directional drilling to maintain trajectory before the opening assembly is run.
