PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) bits use synthetic diamond cutters brazed onto tungsten carbide studs or blades to shear rock through a scraping action. Since their introduction in the 1970s, PDC bits have revolutionized drilling—they now account for over 60% of footage drilled worldwide. The fixed-cutter design has no moving parts, which means fewer failures and longer downhole life compared to roller cone bits in suitable formations.

Q: What formations are PDC bits not recommended for?
